New York City Nightlife - PubsBrooklyn InnThe perfect neighborhood hang where everybody knows your name, or at least you wish they did.
The SceneOnce upon a time it was only the locals who laid low at this oak-and-mirror Boerum Hill favorite. But with nearby Smith Street's commercial explosion, the neighbors must uphold their Sunday afternoon Bloody Mary traditions amidst the encroachment a new crowd of younger, louder types who fill the pub to capacity most evenings. The DrawA first-rate jazz jukebox, a separate pool room (not for the faint of heart) and strong, affordable drinks served with a smile all prove the regulars right--you just can't get this kind of easy good time in Manhattan. Lore has it that the bar was shipped over piecemeal from Germany in the 1860s and has been in operation ever since. Stained glass accents, an inoperable kitchen and doors that lead nowhere all add to the endless mystique. Pull Up a StoolA bar with this much history has more than its share of old-time salty dogs rattling around the bar. Grab a beer and listen up--you never know what bit of arcana you'll pick up. Open HouseIf you can swing it, swing by in the afternoon. The bar's always open by 3pm so you can beat the crowds and get a prime seat at the capacious bar. 138 Bergen St |
