New York City NightclubsMehanata 416 B.C.If we move to Bulgaria, will we have this much fun?
The LookThe elements of Mehenata's decor are disparate, to say the least. The wood paneling covering the walls is "cozy lodge"--until you notice the tiki-style thatched roof on the bar and the pine garlands and twinkly lights strung up above. There's a television playing what looks like cable access, with cheap camera effects and no sound. Settle down and peruse the menu (Mehanata is New York's only Bulgarian restaurant). French fries with feta cheese, anyone? The VibeYou don't know when the turning point will occur in your evening at Mehanata, but trust us, it will happen. One minute, you're chilling out, thinking that your drink is a tad weak; a millisecond later, there's an impromptu dance floor, your drinking companion has beer poured down his back and the gypsy music swells. Everyone except you is singing along to what may be the national anthem. There's a stocky man who looks like he missed the casting call for "The Sopranos," and behind him a goateed guy wearing a fur vest. You don't know why, but you can't think of a better place to be. 416 Broadway |
