New York City Music - Live Music VenuesBirdlandCavernous for a jazz club but comfort, great acoustics and eclectic booking make up for it. Price: $20, $25 weekends, $10 minimum. $15; $20 weekends at the bar.
The StoryIn 1996, Birdland shut its doors way up on 106th Street and headed downtown, closer to where the jazz-going audience is. The original Birdland was opened in 1949 and named after the legendary Charlie Parker. The SpaceThe current version of Birdland is huge--if having too much space at a jazz club ruins the vibe for you, this isn't your spot. On the other hand, comfort hounds tired of sitting on strangers' laps at other clubs will be most appreciative. The booking policy is eclectic and smart, with big names gracing the stage. The sound system, once iffy, is now in tip-top shape, too. 315 W 44th St |
