New York City Music - NYC Jazz ClubsDetourOne of New York's biggest bargains: no-cover jazz and low-priced drinks.
The SceneJazz radio fans by day, live jazz fans by night, the East-Village locals who fill this club are no strangers to the scene. Between sets, bartenders shoptalk with patrons, many of whom are musicians or singers themselves. An old-school tile floor and '50s noir movie posters create a cozy, throwback atmosphere. Jazz styles range from the traditional to the eclectic and experimental; the stage has seen the likes of classic riffs to folk songs, Gershwin ballads to vibraphones, violins and ukeleles. The DrawThe two-drink minimum is a small price to pay for such powerful sounds, especially when most drinks hover around $5. Folks here are friendly, and musicians like to mix and mingle as they take up their tip collection. Favorite regular acts include Elvis Sinatra's vintage Vegas lounge show and the Brooklyn Boogaloo Blowout's '60s soul jazz. Just one warning: The pint-sized space means the bathroom door opens right onto the stage. Slightly awkward, no? Happy HourFrom 4pm to 7pm weekdays, enjoy jazz on the jukebox and $3 pints, bottles and well drinks. Something to Sing AboutWednesday nights get comfy at the "Intimate Room" series, with crooners singing romantic tunes of yesteryear. Set TimeLive jazz runs from 9pm to 12am Sunday through Thursday, and 10pm to 1am on Friday and Saturday. 349 E 13th St |
