I most recently stayed at the Waldorf for 3 nights over the summer. The experience could not have been better. When I arrived I was told that they had made a mistake with my reservation and I should have been offered a promotion - they gave me the promotional rate (100 dollars less per night than I expected) and because of my HiltonHonors membership, upgraded me for free to an executive suite (no point system needed, its a free policy of upgrades). The room was quite nice. The bathroom had been recently remodeled and was as large as many boutique-hip entire hotel rooms. The main room had a non-working fireplace and a view of Park Avenue. The staff were all friendly and super-knowledgeable. Also, the Bull and Bear is pretty good. Most importantly for me, I was travelling with my girlfriend, and we are both in our early 20's. Many luxury hotels feel the need to police their younger clientle (St. Regis) but the Waldorf treated us especially well. I have always preffered old world elegance to edgy plastic chairs, so despite my youth this will always be the place for me.As a note- for those comparing the Plaza to the Waldorf: if you are under 30 go Waldorf. The Plaza staff has never been polite to me and the rooms are all dingy. They are reminiscent of a hotel once grand, now geriatric.
I booked here thinking I would stay at the very best NYC had to offer. I must say, the bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept on. I always had questions for the concierge, who was very knowledgeable, friendly, and not a snob at all. One night, exhausted from 2 days of continuous fun in the Big Apple, I ordered a PPV movie. It ran for several minutes and they quit. It took several phone calls to the front desk and they finally said it wasn't working. As a plus, whenever I'd go for ice down the hall, one of the employees would run out of their way to try and assist me (they also knew me by name, which was surprising). Maid service was very accommodating as well. As for the hotel itself, I found the room and hallways very run down, specially the carpeting. There was something wrong with the sink, but I can't remember what. It really needs a total overhaul. My view was of an alleyway. The window was great in that I'm a coffee lover and I loved sitting inside the generous window sill sipping my coffee each morning. I was so busy it wasn't until the last day that I walked around the hotel and found the cavernous rooms spooky and and run down. (I stayed there September 2002).
We stayed at the Waldorf in October 2003. Our two other friends had a lovely larger room than us on floor 11 (room 1188). We on the other hand had a good size room (not as big but it was ok for our use) just opposite (room 1187). Unless you are deep sleeper refuse that room if you get it. The window would not shut properly so got all the noise from the traffic all through the night. We duly went to reception the next morning and the receptionist was very helpful indeed and said they would move us to a higher floor once the room was vacated. We moved to the 21st floor (nearly the astoria level!!). It was a lot quieter - even though right opposite the service room so could hear some of the machines going - but found that wasn't a problem and did not interfer with our sleep. The room itself was still a reasonable size but decor not as good. Some of the rooms do need to slowly be redecorated. The beds though, they were EXTREMELY comfortable. If you are reading this review and you have already booked with the Waldorf do not let it put you off (like it did me!) It was still a very enjoyable stay. If you are not happy with the room - tell them, they were very willing to help. But I would not stay there again - unless I won the lotto and was able to afford a suite. Enjoy your stay if you are going. |
