New York > New York Hotels > Book this hotelThe Roger Williams hotel description>>
Stayed here the weekend of Sept 26, our second time (first was the July 4th weekend). I agree with the previous reviewer that there is little to complain about. Arrived early (about noon) both times, and both times we were able to check into our rooms upon arrival. Staff was super courteous, the gentleman who checked us in even remembered we had visited before. Had a coupon from the hotel's web site ... for $10 off per night, and he accepted that with no problem. I'd suggest paying the extra $10 for the 250 sq. ft room vs the 200, since even the 250 is fairly small. Also had bottles of water replaced, maid staff was great. We always went out for breakfast, but the continental breakfast served is a good spread (even has hard boiled eggs). We never had to wait more than 2-3 minutes for an elevator. Only complaint is the street noise (had a particularly annoying night when a car alarm went off 4 times in the space of an hour), but being New York that goes with the territory. We had made reservations at another hotel for the second stay, because when we first planned the second trip the hotel web site was quoting a rate of $229 per night, but we kept checking back and sure enough, they lowered the rate to $179 ($169 with the $10 discount) about two weeks before our trip - so keep checking their web site.
I'm wondering if previous reviewers stayed at the same hotel as me! We arrived in New York by train from Boston and it was an easy 15 minute walk to the hotel. There is an ever-present doorman to open the door for you when you arrive. Quick, professional check-in. I'd booked with lodging.com - and saved a couple of hundred pounds on the hotel's rates - so everything, including taxes, were prepaid. The lobby is very modern, although I didn't try the grand piano. Previous reviewers have mentioned the lifts - there are only two of them but you'd need to be a very impatient person to moan about having to wait a minute for a lift. We had a room with two double beds. The room was long and narrow, about the width of two double beds plus about three feet. But it was quite long, room enough for a big televison, wardrobe, cd player/alarm clock and two easy chairs plus a coffee table. They have quite a large selection of CDs and videos at the front desk, should you be thoroughly knackered and there's nothing on the 30-odd television channels they have. There is bottled water for you in your room; contrary to another review you don't pay an extra $1 per bottle, it's all free (we used both bottles every day and they were always replaced for us by the maid, and I wasn't charged). Yes, bathroom is small, but to be honest our bathroom at home isn't much larger so we didn't mind that. We had a bath, not one of those wooden showers that some people have mentioned. It was, however, clean with a hot and powerful shower. There are also a couple of 24 hour internet access computers should you need to check your email and you don't have a laptop computer with you.The hotel has no restaurant or bar - to be frank who cares about that? - but it does offer a good and filling cold buffet breakfast; cereal, juice, croissants, bagels and the like, and there is a 24 hour self-service coffee machine. Around the hotel there are a few restaurants, a Subway sandwich shop etc, and if that doesn't do you, walk towards 5th Avenue or 34th Street for a much greater choice of places. The hotel is located in a 'quieter' area of New York, and by that I mean you only get taxi horns at night and not taxi horns + lots of people. But that doesn't mean it's isolated. Herald Square (Macy's and lots of eateries) is three blocks away; the Empire State Building is two. The nearest subway is 33rd Street on Park Lane and it's only a minute's walk from the hotel, so no complaints there. Additionally there are plenty of buses along Madison Avenue or 5th Avenue - this is recommended instead of the subway as the subway cars are air-conditioned (as are the buses) but the platforms are not, making the platforms the closest thing to an oven you will experience in a long time. Times Square and all its associated lights were 20 mins walk away - which to some people might seem like a walk to the end of the earth but to us was no problem at all. Grand Central Terminal (where we picked up a coach to JFK airport) was 10-15 minutes walk with heavy suitcases - lighter without! Concerning that; the hotel kept our cases, properly tagged, after we checked out.In short, I was perfectly happy with this hotel. Look around on different Expedia-type websites for offers; if you get a good deal then there's no reason not to book!
The Roger Williams is a great place to stay in NYC for families for a weekend visit. The staff was very friendly with videos and continental breakfast at no extra charge. We also liked the location since it was convenient to most of our destinations. |
