To be honest, not impressed

I know it was a busy weekend in New York for the Marathon, but because of budgets I was almost forced to go for the Moderne without reading the reviews here first - boy, do I wish I had read them!Almost from the start I had problems. The room I was in smelt musty, the toilet didn't flush properly and the sink didn't hold water because the plug was faulty. My view was of a wall, and the air conditioning was noisy. If you get a room on the ground floor beware - because this will be the same. The video was also missing a cable, which took almost two days to fix.So why not one mark? Well, the staff were very helpful and I get the feeling I would have got a room change had it not already been fully booked. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the room clean and of good size. It's just the bad memories of the Moderne will always outweigh the good ones. The hotel needs improving .... and fast!
Moderne and quaintly shabby don't mix

Nice try, but the result was an uneasy combination of clever mod decor and a below-average, just-plain-old NY hotel under a rapidly aging (if hip) coat of paint. It's possible to make over an old hotel (Morgans, for instance), but this one looks like they ran out of money - a while ago. Sheets were too small for bed, desk lamp was broken and flickering, paint and carpet were showing wear. Also, our standard room was the smallest I've seen in NY, and the single window was so close to adjacent building the room had zero natural light at 12 noon. At $100 this could be a bargain. At $180+ there are many nicer properties to choose from. On the bright side, it is hard to find a NY hotel that hasn't bought into the whole kitchy art deco thing - the mid-20th-century modern treatment is refreshing and convincing.
Will stay again

There were six of us girls that stayed here in May of 2003 and it was great. Loved the comfortable beds and the bathroom was very clean. The large soaking tub was wonderful after a long day of sightseeing. They even had a continental breakfast every morning with juices, coffee, bagels and cream cheese. The price and location can't be beat. Will be staying there again this December.
