Poor Hotel in a Great Location

Having enjoyed the splendour of a new P&O ship across the Atlantic it took nearly TWO HOURS to check in. We always stay in 'smoking' rooms when possible, but the smell of stale smoke was offensive, even to hardened smokers. There was mould all around the bath and shower. The washhand basin didn't drain. There were no tea/coffee making facilities. In the last three years I have stayed in well over a dozen hotels in Europe & the US. This is unquestionably the worst. Having said that, we might just have been unlucky. The salvation, for us, was the location. Just a minute's walk to Times Square.
Great Place to Stay

Perfect location for sightseeing, dining and shopping in NY. Staff were helpful and accomodating. Room was perfectly cleaned every day.
Nice room, slipshod service

I stayed in a Premier room, which is in a separate tower from the main hotel. I loved the room; the decor was very pleasant with aesthetically pleasing lighting and use of delightful light green glass in the bedroom and bathroom, a very large window and nice touches such as a rock garden. The fitness center is small, but has good equipment. A very good complimentary continental breakfast is available in the lounge in this tower. Unfortunately, in numerous large and small ways which really add up,the service is remarkably deficient. When I called in advance to inquire what time breakfast is available, the person told me 9am. The next time I called (to inquire about parking, but I figured I would also ask about breakfast), the person told me 6:00 or 6:30 am. Breakfast actually started at 7:00 am on Sunday. The hotel staff should have known. The hotel service book explains where to find the ice machine, but there was no ice machine in my tower. In the gym, there were no cups for water, despite the presence of a cup dispenser. On the morning I was checking out, the housekeeper interrupted my shower to find out if I wanted the room made up. She should have known that I was checking out and stayed away until being notified that I had left. The concierge told me that my car would be at one entrance, but it was actually at the other entrance (it was pouring rain, so this was inconvenient). When I tipped the doorman and he gave me my car keys, he turned his back on me to continue blabbing with some man and he left me standing on the sidewalk to place my own luggage in the car. That was the final straw. I won't be returning.
