Just Okay

Stayed here this week on a reservation someone else made. Mixed reviews below are generally on target. This hotel was just fine on the big issues - great location, clean rooms, comfortable beds, shower with plenty of water pressure, functional if spartan layout with desk space, multiple phones & high-speed internet access - but in other ways it showed a pattern of overlooking little things that make a difference between a decent hotel and a good one. Front desk staff and restaurant staff were indifferent even by NYC standards, room-key computer wasn't working, no coffeemaker in the room, shower drained slowly, do-not-disturb tag & door hooks were missing, etc. If you can get a heavily discounted room over the net, you'll get what you paid for - if you're paying rack rate to stay here, there are better choices in the area.
What a relief

As a result of reading the reveiws we were very apprehensive about what to expect. we were staying for a week in september 2003. we found the hotel to be perfectly acceptable, the staff helpful and the location wonderful. Recommend the Oxford diner and the wonderful Willi. Also ate at the hotel restaurant which was very good if not a little expensive. Anyone going to the Metropolitan please do not worry as i did.
Just Satisfactory

We stopped in the Metropolitan for four nights in early September. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and very helful in some cases. The hotel itself is excellently positioned in Manhattan and is convenient for most of the attractions in New York. Any that you can't walk to you can get to by the subway. There is a subway station just outside the hotel. Buy a pass for the buses and the subway from the hotel travel desk. Our room was small and clean and all the equipment worked in it. On the less positive side the hotel room furniture, carpets etc looked tired and ready for replacement. Two rooms on the floor we stayed on were being refurbished but all the time we were there we never saw anybody working on them. There was absolutely no view from our room except the view of air conditioning units, the noise of which droned on continually. The Metropolitan Hotel was economical to stay in but is not the height of luxury. For breakfast go to Oxfords a deli one minute north on Lexington. Willi will look after you. Tell him you saw his name on the internet, we did. He was delighted.
