While I arrived on Friday after the blackout and the individuals were dealing with the problems in the best way they could, it was clear that they were overwhelmed. There was no air, water or other facilities available but they "let" us stay for the rate of $169.00 (confirmed reservation by the way). On Saturday, we were informed that they did not know when the power would be restored. Finally, I checked out on Saturday and watched the woman at the front desk be very rude to arrivals. In the past, I have stayed there but would not again as I saw on Friday that it did not matter about the people arriving nor were we given any consideration for our discomfort as well.
Hotel is clean, staff is nice, can't beat the location, only 3 blocks south of Grand Central Station. Rooms are just about the size of a small room in a house, but bigger than most New York Hotel rooms that I have been in. Don't expect too much. Got a great price for about $109 on expedia. If you are looking for your average hotel room size, you will have to pay somewhere between $150-$200, but for the under $150 range most hotels will only have enough room for a queen bed, this hotel gives you more space than normal for this price range. Bathroom was clean. Quiet with the usual city sounds in the background. Food choices for this area are mostly tourist traps, suggest you look on 3rd avenue starting from 35th and head south.
The room was reserved at a special rate advertised in New York's leading on-line newspaper. It was not the double I booked, had one bed slightly larger than a twin. My travel companion slept on a matress on the floor. There was room for the bed and the matress and little else; we requested the chair and table be removed. The hotel manager adjusted the nightly rate when presented with written confirmation of the reservation. With this adjustment, the room was a great value. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is amazing! Grand Central Terminal is a block away. The Empire State Building is three blocks away. The view from our window up the side of that magestic structure was awe inspiring. The location and the staff made up for shortcomings of the facility. A group from Ireland visiting for the weekend had more serious problems. They made reservations a year ahead of time only to learn their plans to sleep four-to-a-room on a wide twin bed would not be possible. The double rooms we and the ladies from Ireland reserved may not exist. The splendor and excitement of the city more than compensated for my disappointment with the room. The room would have been better for a lone traveler or shared with a close companion. |
