Theater District: The Best of NYC Dining - Restaurant

District

Following a culinary script equal parts comedy and drama, a leading chef cooks up a pre-theater hit.

The Scene

A comfortable theater-themed space that thankfully doesn't carry the metaphor too far. Unless you know to look, you might not notice that a row of stage lights illuminates the waitstation or that proscenium arches have been simulated along the walls. Like the lobby of the connecting Muse Hotel, there's a sense of quiet contrast to the chaos of nearby Times Square.

The Food

Chef Sam DeMarco's approach to cooking is as cartoonish as it is highly stylized. His menu contains strange characters like "Truffle Boy" and foie gras preparations named after Disney ducks. But DeMarco is nothing but serious about the way things taste and he seems to love the challenge of lending legitimacy to ingredients generally disfavored in haute cooking circles, like vodka, Hot Toddys and sauerkraut. Search hard for duds at District--they aren't easy to find.

Recommended Dishes

Cauliflower custard royale with Nantucket bay scallops, caviar and vodka creme fraiche; beef carpaccio and porcini salad; ceviche "fish 'n' chips"; diver sea scallops over truffled mashed potatoes; roast pork loin with sauerkraut and a Hot Toddy sauce.
